The New Year

The Cabbalah teaches that each day is a living, sentient being which bears the record of all our physical and psychic acts. You might say that the 365 days of the year are like a magnetic tape on which each day, with all that it has brought of good and evil, happiness and unhappiness, is recorded. Each separate year of our lives is like a separate tape recording. The New Year is new and yet, at the same time, it is already old, aged by all that each one of us has already gone through in our lives. The new year is like the pure water of a mountain stream as it mingles with the stagnant waters of the lowlands; it is new and yet it is not altogether new because it is lived by human beings who are burdened by their past. This is why, although all is new, men and women never manage to live an entirely new life. The New Year is a spotless virgin, but who knows what shady resorts it will get …

Good Friday-sacrifice and the beauty of the new life

By accepting to die on the cross, Jesus made a sacrifice, and we must meditate on this in order to measure the grandeur of it, and to link ourselves to it through thought. But in the new life which the Christ is now proposing, it is not recommended that we dwell on the suffering of the cross, because the Christ also manifests through beauty, joy and light. In the new society, it is thoughts of the glory of Christ that must nourish our inner life. Heaven rejoices that we no longer kiss the ground and kneel beside graves, because there is a more glorious future in store for us. And if there are dead to be tended to, it is not those in the cemeteries, but those buried deep inside us: our old habits and our old misconceptions. These are the dead we must seek out and be done with! When we succeed in this, we too will enter into the glory of Christ. Easter- the mystery of death and rebirth

‘If you do not die, you shall not live’, said Jesus. The idea of resurrection, then, is linked with death and disintegration. If the seed does not die, it prevents the manifestation of the power of life buried in it. In a human being, it is the lower self that must die to leave room for the Spirit, the divine principle, which is then free to act and transform everything… The secret of the resurrection is before our eyes in Nature, waiting for us to understand it and decide to die consciously so as to become a new being…… ‘If you do not die, you shall not life…’ To die means to be melted into the Infinite whilst God takes the place vacated by you. God now reigns in you, no longer do you care about your life, you are willing to disappear, to have God take your place. If you really insist and keep on insisting He will be obliged to capitulate, because you are using the same methods he uses! God cannot say, …

Article: Universal Brotherhood in the Age of Aquarius

This article gives a general over-view of the ‘Aquarian’ teachings of Omraam Mikhael Aivanhov. It was published in the Rainbow News magazine in New Zealand a decade ago and I am republishing it on this blog hoping that it will be of interest to some of you! SJJ The old Piscean age is fading into history to make way for a new age of Aquarius, the age of universal brotherhood.  Aquarius, the sign of universality and brotherly love, has been making it’s influence known for centuries now.  Under the influence of this constellation, a new note is being sounded.  The powerful Aquarian currents are creating evolutionary conditions that will gradually allow humanity’s cherished dream of brotherhood between all human beings, regardless of race or religion, to finally become reality.  Despite the apparently contradictory evidence from the media, universal brotherhood is an idea whose time has come. Universal Consciousness My optimism in making this statement stems from my experience of visiting some of the spiritual communities of the Universal White Brotherhood, which exist all over the …

Expressing our true, divine nature

You should understand that you are divinities. Yes, divinities, and you live on a higher plane free of limitations, shadows and darkness, sorrow and suffering, in the midst of abundance and joy. Do you know what prevents you from manifesting the splendour of those higher regions here below? Your personality- in other words, your lower nature. Your personality is too unadaptable, too self-centred to capture the subtle messages from those regions… like a radio that cannot pick up all the stations. The waves and vibrations released by Cosmic Intelligence in the higher spheres are swift as lightning, and the matter of the personality is too dense, too hard of hearing to vibrate in tune with them, and so it cannot seize divine messages. They flash by without making an impression and we continue to live in ignorance, far from knowing or experiencing the wonderful joy of our higher Being. Omraam Mikhael Aivanhov   Jnani Yoga  There are ways of changing this situation. If you choose to lead a pure life and become once again a …

Waterfall and flowing stream

Let all around us be peace, love

Let the spring of love flow within you. Through your thoughts, your feelings, your wishes, your words, let it gush forth over all the creatures and objects around you and beyond, on the trees, the mountains, the oceans. Even if you are by yourself, remember to utter words of peace, of hope and of joy for all human beings on earth, knowing that these words will have an effect somewhere, no matter where. You do not yet know what it is possible to achieve with love. And since we can only give to others what we possess ourselves, try first to establish harmony and light within you, and then, once you feel you have succeeded in making this harmony and light real within you, in your heart and your soul, project them into space. This is what working with love is all about: becoming a beneficial presence for the entire world. Omraam Mikhael Aivanhov This thought from the master (today’s Daily Meditation) chimes with one of my favourite tracks on Youtube at the moment. The …

The brave heart of a snowdrop

The snowdrop, which flowers toward the end of winter, announces the imminent arrival of spring. Study it: with what willpower and courage it commands the snow and the earth, ‘Let me through! I want to come up!’ And yet it is fragile, it has such tender, delicate petals, and the slightest thing can harm it. But the earth and the snow obey it, they make way for it, and it comes up and flowers. How does it make the earth open up? It possesses an irresistible force within the tiny stem that is starting to come up, and so it prevails. Because love always prevails! So, what about you? Do you not have greater means than a snowdrop at your disposal? Yes, you do. Only, you do not have enough faith and willpower to tell events, difficulties and limitations, ‘Move out of the way! Let me through! I want to come up. I want to admire and praise the Creator!’ If you persevere like the snowdrop, you will always succeed in freeing yourself, and you …

The mystical meaning of Christmas

Why do we celebrate Christmas at the beginning of Winter? The reply can be found in the book of nature. All life begins as a seed, a seed buried in the darkness of the earth or deep within a woman’s womb. Winter is the season when, in the seeds planted in the earth, the long work of germination takes place; and this work ends in springtime, when a multitude of new existences burst into life. An identical work takes place in the psyche of each human being: in the dark earth, representing his lower nature, the seed of the divine Self, the Christ, must begin to germinate. This is the event which Christians celebrate on Christmas night…yes, exactly then, during the night, at midnight, the moment of greatest darkness. Omraam Mikhael Aivanhov    Sons and Daughters of God We celebrate the birth of the master Jesus at Christmas, but just as important as the commemoration of this historical event, is the opportunity  we all have to prepare for the birth of the Christ child within …

Why is fire so beautiful?

“You have all watched a wood fire blazing in a hearth, but have you ever wondered exactly what happens to make all those dead, dark, twisted logs and branches so bright and beautiful? Isn’t it miraculous to see something that was so black being transformed into something so luminous? But you can do the same: whether you are at home in front of your own fireplace, or here, gathered round the Michaelmas fire at the Bonfin, you can use your imagination to burn your own dead branches- that is, all the instinctive tendencies of your animal nature. All that useless dead wood- into the fire with it! Fire is capable of converting everything into heat and light, and it is you who stand to gain; otherwise, what use would all those dead branches be to you? They can give you neither warmth not light because you lack the power to transform them. Give them to the fire, and it will give them back to you in the form of light and heat.” Omraam Mikhael Aivanhov”  A …

Rhythmic breathing- the universal ebb and flow

‘Everything breathes- trees, oceans, even stones… The earth is alive and it breathes; the stars too. Yes, they breathe in and out and the influence of their respiration is felt even here on earth…. Respiration can reveal great mysteries to you, but only when you accompany it with some mental work. As you breathe out, think that you are expanding to the very limits of the universe and then, as you breathe in again, you contract and withdraw into yourself, into your Self, that imperceptible point at the centre of an infinite circle. Again  you expand and again you contract… In this way you will discover the movement of the ebb and flow which is th key to all the rhythms of the universe. When you become conscious of this movement within your own being, you enter into the harmony of the cosmos and establish a relationship of exchange between yourself and the universe for, as you breathe in, you inhale elements from space and , as you breathe out, you send out into space …

Video:Meditate on light…

People think there is nothing they can do to help or improve humanity as a whole. Well, it might seem like an impossible task- it is certainly gigantic-but if you learn certain methods, you will see that all of a sudden it becomes possible…Try to imagine, for instance, that the whole of humanity is condensed into a single being, standing there by your side, and you hold the hand of this being and give them quantities of light and love. When you do this, some minute particles go out from your soul, and the love you give this one being reflects on every being in the world; they begin to  conceive nobler thoughts and desires in their heart. If hundreds and thousands of people on earth did this exercise, you would see the breath of a new, divine spirit in humanity, and without knowing how or why, they would one day wake up to find themselves completely transformed. Omraam Mikhael Aivanhov   A New Earth This video today can be used as a guided meditation on …

The Voice of Silence

“Silence, peace and harmony are all expressions of the same reality. Do not think that silence is empty and mute, no, silence is alive and vibrant, it speaks and sings. One day, thanks to contemplation, prayer and meditation, you will manage to hear the voice of silence. Once all the chaotic forces within you have finally subsided, silence will draw closer, it will spread all around you and enfold you in its marvelous mantle… You must understand that silence is the condition absolutely indispensable for the true Word, for true revelations. During silence, little by little, you begin to sense the messages which come to you, a voice begins to speak to you. It is this voice which warns, guides and protects you….. If you do not hear it, it’s because you are making too much noise, not only on the physical plane, but also in your thoughts and feelings. If you want this voice to speak to you , you must install silence within yourself.  This voice is sometimes called ‘the voice of silence’; …

Why meditate?

The master Omraam gave many original lectures on meditation and contemplation which I have found really useful in my own spiritual practice. The first one I am sharing focuses on the basic question of why we need to meditate if we want to make progress in our spiritual life: There are many different degrees to meditation. And we must understand that meditation is more than reflection. To meditate means to focus on a subject,  a quality or virtue, on something that you are either lacking, or wish to develop. But you will not have any desire to develop a particular quality or virtue such as  kindness, generosity, peace, light, wisdom or love, (there are so many qualities and virtues), unless you cherish a high ideal. But what is this high ideal? It’s to want to become something better than ordinary- by which I mean purer, more perfect, more intelligent, more powerful, in fact, to become a model, an example. Omraam Mikhael Aivanhov If you do not have this ideal of becoming an example, of perfecting …

Love, Venus and Roses

“Whenever you admire the blooms on a rose bush, remember you are standing before living creatures, descended from the planet Venus. You may ask how roses could possibly originate from Venus, given that conditions on that planet are not hospitable to life… That’s true but for initiatic science the planets are not just the physical, material bodies studied by astronomy;  for initiatic science, the planets are passage ways, they are intermediaries between cosmic currents and the earth. Through the intermediary of the planets, the earth receives currents and influences of which God is the distant source. That is why, since time immemorial, initiates have associated the planets with  qualities and virtues; the Moon to purity, Mercury to intelligence. Jupiter to generosity etc. So the planets serve as reservoirs of currents that travel through space and, according to their nature, become condensed on earth in such and such receptacle. Roses are receptacles for currents from Venus, the currents of love. If we know how to approach them we will receive some of this love.” Omraam Mikhael Aivanhov …

Church bells ringing

A meditation and poem for the ending of the year

Do not wait for the kingdom of God as you would a political or social organisation that comes to impose itself on earth. The kingdom of God is first and foremost a state of consciousness, a way of living and working. That is why it cannot be realised on the physical plane until it is first realised in our thoughts. Once realised in our thoughts it will descend into the heart, into our feelings, and it is then that it can finally be expressed in our actions. For such is the order of manifestation in matter: thought – feeling – action. One day the kingdom of God will manifest tangibly on earth, but first it must enter the thoughts and feelings of human beings. And we can see that the process has already begun. Thousands of men and women in the world nourish within themselves the ideal and love of the kingdom of God; there are many more than you may think. And in some of them, in their conduct and their way of life, …

train tracks diverging

You shape your future every day, every hour

When you decide to start a project, be aware that you shape your future every day, every hour, and even every second. When you have a good thought, or a good feeling, this sets you instantly on the path of light. But if a few minutes later a person or an incident triggers a selfish, unjust thought, or a feeling of anger, or a desire for revenge, your orientation changes, and you veer towards darkness. And even if on the physical plane, no change can be seen immediately – as these thoughts and feelings do not have time to materialise – something has changed in the higher regions, in the direction you are taking. When  a certain lever is pulled, the train changes tracks. Well, that is what people do every day, sometimes a hundred or a thousand times a day: once in the right direction, once in the wrong direction – they change tracks. Since everything is recorded, each of these changes is recorded too. If they do not produce anything permanent on the …

Meditation, contemplation, concentration

“Meditation is an activity of the mind- an attempt to deepen your understanding of spiritual truths. Contemplation, on the other hand, is an activity of the heart or soul- you dwell on an image, a quality or a virtue in order to rejoice in its light and beauty and be in communion with it. And on a higher level still, there is the magical activity of identification by which the will and the spirit identify with the creator in order to create. Some days you will feel inclined to work with the mind: to think and search and ponder, this is meditation. On other days, when you are in a state of hamony, peace and bliss, you may feel drawn to contemplation. And then there are other days when your will manifests itself more strongly and you feel the need to do something, to create, to set in motion invisible forces. You have all certainly experienced these three states even though you may not have recognised them or been able to define them. But you need …

The whole of nature is alive…

“When initiates open their door in the morning, before doing anything else, they salute nature: the trees, the sky, and the sun, the day itself and the whole of creation. You will wonder why they do that and the answer is – that is how they put themselves in direct contact with the source of life. Yes, for nature responds to their greeting… How often have I gone out into my garden in the morning and greeted the angels of the four elements, the angels of fire, air, water and earth, and even the gnomes, nymphs, sylphs and salamanders. And when you do this you see them dancing and singing for joy. I send greetings to the trees, the rocks, and the wind, too. Try it yourself and you will feel that something inside you slips into place and becomes more harmonious, and that many elements of obscurity or misunderstanding fade from you simply because you have decided to salute living nature and the creatures that dwell within it. You might think, ‘What difference does …

Twin Souls

Every human being possesses a twin soul.  When the first human being leaped like a flame, a spark, from the bosom of his creator, he was two in one and each of his two halves was the perfect complement of the other. Later, these two halves became separated, each of them taking a different direction and evolving in its own way. During the course of their evolution they sometimes meet and, if they recognize each other, it is because each carries the image of the other in the depths of his being; each has put his seal on the other. Every human being, therefore, carries the portrait of his sister soul within him; it may be a hazy image but it is there, and this is why every man and woman comes to earth with the vague hope of finding a soul who will fulfil all his needs and with whom he may be united in total harmony. Omraam Mikhael Aivanhov      Love and Sexuality Part 1      You all know this; every …
