Extract from ‘The New Year’

Today I would like to say a few words to you about the teaching handed down in the esoteric tradition concerning the first day of the New Year. And as the only kind of knowledge that really interests me is that which can be immediately useful, you can apply what I shall tell you to your own everyday lives. Most people celebrate New Year’s Day in night clubs, bars and dance-halls. They express their joy at the coming of the New Year by having parties and amusing themselves and indulging in all kinds of follies. And then they fritter away the rest of the year in unconsciousness and futility and, as unconsciousness always leads to tribulations, it is not long before the tribulations begin! It is quite senseless to start off the New Year in this way; it shows that they who do so have no inkling of the spiritual and magical aspect of things. But this is the aspect which interests me. The Cabbalah teaches that each day is a living, sentient being which …

Daily Meditation for Christmas Day

Each year on December 25th, Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus, and in every church a crib is set up. The child is there, lying on the straw; Mary and Joseph watch over him, and an ass and an ox, too. The ox and ass are never left out! But these two animals are symbols that have to be interpreted; they correspond to processes that take place in human beings. The stable is the physical body and the ox is sexual energy. As for the ass, it represents what tradition calls ‘the old Adam’, self-centred, stubborn and obstinate, but nevertheless a good servant- that is, the lower nature, the personality. Those who decide to work towards the birth of the Christ within, first come into conflict with the forces of their lower nature and sexuality. Those are the forces they must master and put to work for the divine Child. And so it is said that in the stable the ox and ass breathed on the child and warmed him with their breath. When human …

Unspoken love

Why tell someone you love them? It is enough to love them. Love can be felt, can be seen – it is even the hardest thing to hide; it expresses itself through your gaze, your movements, your attitude. You do not have to declare it. Human beings expect too much of the verbal or written expression of their love. Once they have spoken of it, they think the matter is settled. Not at all – they speak, they repeat what they said, but their behaviour increasingly shows their love is fading. Love must be preserved as a very precious thing, the most precious thing, and expressed as little as possible through words. In this way it gradually creates unsurpassable freedom and delight in the soul. If you speak of it, you will soon get reactions from all sides which will create misunderstandings, and this will be a shame. Don’t speak of your love and it will live forever within you. When Christ is born in a soul

Even if what is written in the Gospels on the subject of Jesus’ birth didn’t correspond to historical reality, it is absolutely true from the symbolic and esoteric point of view, and this is what is important for us. When the Christ child is born in the soul of the disciple, the celestial spirits place themselves in his service, for he is a royal child, and all heaven comes to admire him and bring him what he needs. Whether or not a star, angels, shepherds and a manger with an ass and ox really existed does not matter; from a symbolic point of view it is all true. Each time the Christ is born in a soul, the star is there, the angels sing, and the wise men come and bow down, offering gifts. Omraam Mikhael Aivanhov

The moon, the divine feminine and the child of light

A birth is none other than a transition from the invisible to the visible, from the immaterial to the material, from thought to manifestation. In our body, it is the moon, the archetype of the feminine, that presides over all forms of incarnation. In winter, the period during which the nights are longest and the life of nature slows down, conditions are less favourable for outward manifestation but more favourable, on the other hand, for inner life: human beings feel the urge to go within themselves to prepare the birth of the child of light, which is represented in some traditions by the symbol of the pearl. The pearl, coming as it does from the sea, is, like the sea, related to the moon. On the sephirotic tree, the pearl oyster is Yesod, the sephirah where the moon is found. In the cosmic body, Yesod represents the genital organs. That is where the pearl must be formed. This pearl represents the purest quintessence of love. The pearl oyster is the feminine principle, which brings a …

Seek help from the light

Whatever your difficulties may be, turn to the light, the light that pervades the whole universe. When you feel tired, discouraged or disappointed, think of seeking help from this light, concentrate on it and imagine you are making it course through you. Not only will it purify your psychic body, but to some extent also your physical body, and you will feel more peaceful, revived, capable of resuming your activities, for it will have given you enthusiasm. One of the most effective methods for gathering this light is to thank the Lord and bless his name. Several times a day, pause and repeat, ‘Thank you, thank you Lord; thank you for life, thank you for light, may your name be blessed for all eternity. Omraam Mikhael Aivanhov Video:Meditate on light

Can drinking water improve brain function?

Fill a cup or a glass with water… Even such a small quantity of water can represent all the water on earth. Symbolically, magically, it only takes only one drop for us to be connected to all the rivers, lakes and oceans. Concentrate on this cupful, greet it so that it becomes even more alive and vibrant, tell it how much you admire it, how beautiful you find it, ask it to grant you its clarity, its transparency. Then, when you have thoroughly washed your hands, you can touch this water, dip your fingers in it, aware that you are coming into contact with its etheric body, that you are absorbing its vibrations, that they permeate you. If you do this exercise with a feeling of sacredness, you will feel your body vibrate in harmony with all of nature, you will become lighter, purer, and even your brain will work better. And since, of the four elements, water is the one which blends most intimately with our body, you can drink it thinking that you …

The aura- our true protective garment

Clothes are screens which insulate us and protect us from the world around us. Without clothes we are more exposed and naturally become more sensitive. If we draw an analogy with our inner life, we can say that sensitivity is a manifestation of spirituality: those who make an effort to tear themselves from ordinary preoccupations and to overcome their basic instincts, are able to slowly dissolve the dark layers surrounding them like coarse cloth, and become more receptive to the divine world. In the sacred books, we read accounts in which those who have succeeded in passing initiatic tests receive a garment in reward. It may be white or coloured, but it is always depicted as a precious delicate cloth, as a material of almost otherworldly beauty. This garment symbolizes the aura, which is our true garment. In order to earn it, we must rid ourselves of everything that weighs us down and dims our consciousness, so that we may be in contact with the divine world. Our aura, this garment of light, shows that …

The spring of life

God is a bubbling spring. And in human beings – created in his image – there is also a spring, buried deeply and waiting to bubble up and flow when conditions are right. If we succeed, through thought and prayer, in connecting with the heavenly Source, we will enable the water from our own spring to flow, and all our cells will be watered, brought to life by the divine water. If we learn to make this spring flow within us – the spring of life, which is love and light– we will become an instrument in heaven’s hands. And then we will one day be able to fulfil the programme given by Master Peter Deunov in this very beautiful, profound formula, ‘Have a heart as pure as crystal, a mind as luminous as the sun, a soul as vast as the universe and a spirit as powerful as God and at one with God. Life has often been compared to flowing water. But what a difference there is between water that gushes forth from …

True consciousness- the sense of universality

Humans are defined by the fact that they are endowed with consciousness, but they are only truly conscious when they are awakened to the notions of collectivity, of universality. This faculty allows them to enter into the heart and soul of others, to the extent that when they cause others to suffer, they themselves experience the pain they have inflicted. They feel and understand that everything they do to others, both good and bad, they do to themselves. In appearance, each human appears to be distinct and separate from everyone else. But in reality, a part of them is connected to the collective whole and lives in all creatures throughout the cosmos. Once this collective consciousness is awakened in you, you will sense in your relations with others that everything – your thoughts, feelings, words and actions – comes back to you like an echo, because your being, by extending throughout the universe, has become a collective entity. It is this state of consciousness that can be called a sense of fraternity. Omraam Mikhael Aivanhov …

The creative spirit is above destiny

In order to survive on the physical plane, we, as human beings, must receive everything we need from the external world. We would be unable to live without the elements that the earth, water, air and the sun provide for us. We are creatures, and all creatures have to get what they need from outside themselves in order to survive. Only the Creator is above this law – he has no need of anything external to himself since he is life. But since within each creature, the Creator left a particle of himself, a spark, a spirit, of the same nature as himself, thanks to this spirit that inhabits them, each creature can also become creators themselves. And so, instead of always waiting for everything to come to them from outside, human beings have the ability to act within, by means of their thoughts, willpower, and spirit, and to capture the elements they need to support their physical life and especially their psychic life. This is why the teaching of the initiates has always been …

The kingdom of God- balance, harmony and blessing

Jesus said, ‘Strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness.’ Why does the kingdom of God come first? Because it represents a state of perfection, of fulfilment. Everything is contained in it – health, wealth, beauty, order, freedom, peace, wisdom, love, joy… This is why Jesus adds, ‘and all these things will be given to you as well’. The kingdom of God is the synthesis of everything else, of every blessing one could ask for. You say, ‘Oh, if I were powerful… If I were rich… If I were beautiful!’ But these are only particular aspects, attributes, of the kingdom of God, and as soon as you begin to wish for any one in particular, an imbalance sets in. The kingdom of God is above all a state of balance and harmony. If you insist on one point, something else is bound to suffer, and so you are already introducing the seed of disharmony. Everything our soul, spirit, heart, mind and body need is contained in the words ‘the kingdom of God’. Omraam …

Feeding the sacred fire within

You are wondering how you can feed the sacred fire within: each day, throw pieces of your lower nature onto it. Yes, for it is the lower nature, the personality, which is destined to feed the fire of the spirit. So stop complaining that you are not able to rid yourself of your lower nature, for not only would you not be able to survive on earth without it but you would not have the elements with which to feed your spirit. There is a law of magic according to which you must sacrifice some part of your personality if you wish to obtain results on the divine plane. And if you go and find an initiate, a mage, a great master, and ask them for healing for yourself or a family member or friend, for example, or for success in a particular enterprise, they will explain to you that it is only possible if you renounce certain weaknesses. When you renounce things that satisfy your lower nature, it is as if a fire had …

Problems to pearls

If you know how to observe nature, you will see that it continuously offers us ways to solve our problems. For example, how does an oyster make a pearl? First of all, a grain of sand falls into its shell, and this grain of sand is a problem, an irritant. ‘Oh’, says the oyster, ‘how can I get rid of this? It is scratching me, it irritates me, what can I do?’ It begins to think, it concentrates, it meditates! And one day it begins to secrete a special substance that envelops this irritating grain of sand in such a way that it becomes smooth, polished and velvety. And when it has succeeded, it is happy and says to itself, ‘Not only is this grain of sand no longer bothering me, but I have also produced a magnificent pearl!’ This is the lesson of the pearl oyster: it teaches you that by means of thought you can envelop your worries and irritation in a luminous, iridescent substance, and in doing so you amass extraordinary riches …

The living cross and invisible beings of light

Space is not something vague and undefined. It is subject to a structure which corresponds to the number 4: the four cardinal points. But what are the four cardinal points other than a cross? When initiates are about to start a work, they turn successively to each of the four directions in space, thereby drawing a cross, indicating that their spirit is about to start work. Each of the four cardinal points is presided over by an archangel: Michael for the east, Gabriel for the west, Uriel for the north and Raphael for the south. Since initiates understand the living cross, all the light beings respond to their call and come to participate in their work. This ritual of turning towards the four cardinal points has been perpetuated in the Christian religion in the form of the ‘sign of the cross’. When Christians move their right hand from their forehead, to their solar plexus, and then to their left shoulder, then their right shoulder (or vice-versa, to their right shoulder and then their left shoulder) …

The angels of the four elements : self- transformation

Earth, water, air, fire – the four elements – are governed by angels, the servants of God. That is why we ask the Lord to send us these angels to help us in our spiritual work. Here is a prayer: ‘Lord God Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, Master of the universe, send me your servants, the angels of the earth, water, air and fire, so that I may work with them for the coming of your kingdom and your justice. May the Angel of earth absorb all that is unclean in my physical body, so that I am able to carry out your will and express your splendour! May the Angel of water wash my heart of all impurities, so that it becomes a receptacle of your infinite love! May the Angel of air purify my intellect, so that it shines with your light and your wisdom! Finally, Lord, send me the Angel of fire, that it may sanctify my soul and spirit, so that they become the dwelling place of thy truth!’ Omraam …

Feeding faith

To have faith means having experiences every day that allow us to sense the reality of the divine world. For faith too must be fed. It is fed as we become conscious of the riches God has placed in everything around us – in the earth, water, air and sunlight – and as we make the effort to work with these. What is the point of people reciting and singing that they believe in ‘God, Creator of heaven and earth’, if they do nothing to allow this heaven and this earth to help strengthen their faith in him? They are unaware, careless, superficial; they cut the link with the source of life, and then they say, ‘Nothing has any meaning; there is no God.’ In fact, if you at least made an effort to breathe and eat consciously, to walk and move consciously, a meaning would become apparent to you and you would feel the power of God. Nothing strengthens your faith like experience. When you have had certain experiences, you will be bound to …

Water- messenger of the Universal Soul

You are in contact with water every day and in different ways. But how many of you are aware that water, by its very nature and properties, is a physical expression of the universal Soul? Through the medium of water, the universal Soul sends messages. If you do not receive them, it is because your psychic channels are still blocked. But if you free these channels by nurturing pure thoughts and feelings, you will raise yourself up to the realm of heavenly water, which will fill you with its purity and transparency. So learn to love water, to work with it. Fill a bowl with water, and lean over it while concentrating on beautiful, harmonious and poetic images. You may even see them, because water is the true magic mirror. But the main thing is to feel the presence of these images within you, because their etheric, light-filled substance nourishes the soul. Peaceful blue lake with swan

Peace- the flower of unity and love

Heaven never ceases sending harmonious currents to the earth in an effort to lead human beings toward unity. Those who are ready to receive these currents must wait no longer; they must begin to work. The day they achieve this unity will be the most beautiful moment in human history. What changes there will be when the world becomes one family! All the billions that are being spent uselessly on arms and espionage will be used for everyone’s education and wellbeing. At the moment, unfortunately, we still believe these ideas to be unworkable. People say: ‘Utopia… so what?’ But it is this utopia alone that can save humanity. Human beings can do what they will, they may consider all kinds of solutions, but there is only one: whatever the difficulties, whatever the efforts required, we must work ceaselessly to create unity. Omraam Mikhael Aivanhov  Daily Meditations These words from the master call to my mind the inspiring words and example of Mahatma Ghandi. They were set to music beautifully by Karl Jenkins in ‘The Peacemakers’: I offer you peace …

The inexhaustible source of love

Even though men and women place love above all else and hope to find ‘true love’ that will last forever, why do they find it so difficult keeping it alive for a few years or even, sometimes, just a few months? It is because as soon as they feel attracted to someone, they stop at that person. They do not know that he or she is the channel through which flow other-worldly beauty, riches and qualities and that it is this other world that their soul thirsts for. So they concentrate on this one person and expect everything of him or her. That is the mistake, and it is the source of their disillusionment and unhappiness. Men and women should learn to see each other as the first stage on the path that will lead them to the source of love, and then joy will never leave them. For at its source the water of love is always limpid, pure and life-giving, but also inexhaustible, and they will never stop drinking from this water through …
