Angel messengers

The word ‘angel’ comes from the Greek ‘anguelos’ meaning ‘messenger’. According to the master, the joyful news those angels brought the shepherds was of the coming of one who would bring a new teaching of life, a  life that is pure and filled with the light, love and joy of the spirit. This spirit of love will one day be born in every human soul.

Although I suppose supernatural events such as the shepherds’ experience are uncommon, it is still possible for all of us to  communicate with angels through thought and prayer. It is they that receive our prayers and they act as messengers, bringing answers to us. This extract from ‘Angels and Other Mysteries of the Tree of Life’  explains how they can also give us some of their qualities and their light:

“When you wake up in the morning, why not start your day by thinking of all those creatures of light going up and down between the earth and the throne of God? If you did this, your whole life would be illuminated. Think of them, link yourself to them, contemplate them in your heart and soul, and say their names. When you are in a crowd and you call somebody’s name, they hear you and turn to look at you. This is exactly what happens with the entities of the invisible world: If you call their name, they turn and look at you, and in this way you can make contact with them.

By becoming more and more aware of the reality of these higher entities, you become gradually imbued with their virtues, constantly more alive and luminous, your inner world is progressively enriched.  At the same time, however, you must continue to be very unassuming, knowing well that many of these entities will be far beyound your reach for a long time yet. Begin by trying to make contact with the saints and initiates, with the great spiritual masters who have been entrusted with the care of humanity. Later you can rise to a higher plane and try to get in touch with the angels, for the angels are nearer to human beings than any of the other angelic orders, and are always ready to listen to them, to help them and answer their prayers.”

I’ve never seen an angel myself but my maternal grandmother, who was blind from age 40, claimed to see them. She saw floating figures ‘dressed’ in swirling colors. I guess they are composed of light and vortexes of energy. The master told us there are spiritual centers located at the area of the shoulder blades and as these energy centers are fully awakened in angels that explains why they are represented with wings. We humans are limited by what we are able to perceive so as yet we cannot really picture the true image of angels. Even so, in stain glass windows, the beauty of light shining through the colored glass suggests to me the varying spiritual qualities which the different hierarchies possess.

For anyone who wants to take working with angelic hierarchies seriously, I recommend ‘Angels…’ This book is like a handbook for students of the Cabbalah  (Jewish Mysticism). In the text below, the master uses the names of the spiritual hierarchies as given in the Christian tradition but in the book he lists all the Hebrew names as well.

The angelic hierarchies can give you the elements of the higher worlds you need to nourish your soul and spirit. This is the only way to fulfill the precept Jesus gave us: ‘Be perfect as your heavenly father is perfect’. How can we become perfect if we do not unite ourselves to all those beings who embody the divine virtues?

If you truly want to make progress on your spiritual path, you need to know about these hierarchies and be willing to work with them. The Angels will give you pure life and the Archangels, the sacred fire. The Principalities will enable you to build and organize your inner world; the Powers will give you the courage and audacity you need to defend your ideal and the Dominations, generosity and mercy. The Thrones will give you stability and the understanding of the mysteries.  The Cherubim will give you wisdom and harmony and the Seraphim will give you love, the love that surpasses all knowledge, the love that is fulfillment and total freedom.

Choral societies and choirs, such as the one I sing with, are particularly active at this time of year. Singing Christmas songs with their beautiful lyrics always helps awaken the true spirit of Christmas in me- the spirit of love and hope for a new and more peaceful, loving life. And the master has explained that the playing of certain types of music, particularly choral, sacred music, attracts the presence of angels. They are attracted by beautiful sounds and the energy that is generated by sound. When they visit, they shower us with gifts:

When we sing mystical songs consciously and with the desire to harmonize ourselves with the cosmic order, we attract the presence of angels. They draw close and say,’This is a place for us.’ And they take up their dwelling in the higher regions of our brain, where they bring their instruments, their violins, their harps… they join their voices to ours. And when obscure entities that may still be hanging around us, sense the presence of these royal visitors, they realize there is no place for them and they leave.

I remember a time in Bulgaria when there were still  musicians who played and sang in the streets. The passers- by would give them a few coins and sometimes, a window would open and the face of a pretty young girl would appear and she would throw some coins down with a smile. This is an image of our relationship with the invisible world. We are singing under the windows of heavenly palaces and the angels throw us some coins: joy and light.
